IELTS Writing Task 02 (Discuss both views)

Question:

Some people say that feeling of competition should be encouraged in children while others say that they should be taught to become cooperative. What is your opinion?

Model Answer:

The matter of instilling the sense of competition in children's mind has become a crucial topic of discussion. According to some people, it is important to teach children the necessity of maintaining  healthy competition with others. However, the other people believe that this practice should be discouraged. Rather, children should learn how to live with everyone in terms of cooperation. In this essay, I will discuss both views and give my own opinion.

A number of people believe that children should be motivated to build up a competitive mindset. They possess this kind of perception for a number of reasons. To embark on, competition will help children to excel themselves day by day by learning new skills. Moreover, a clear idea of competition will guide them hugely when they will be exposed to the outside world since our practical life is cutthroat and extremely competitive in this age of modern technology. To illustrate, a recent study of the University of California shows that the children who have been encouraged to be competitive in a healthy manner posess an elated level of confidence as they know how to flourish their qualities and deal with the outside world. These few instances bolster the idea why some people are in favour of including competition in children's life.

On the other hand, a fair amount of people strongly hold the idea that competition is adverse to children's proper growth. In their view, the term  "competition"  is like an irresistible addiction. If children get addicted to it once, they will become greedy for success and forget their near and dear ones and also their hobbies. In fact, they become robotic. In addition, competition also causes frustration when children fail to achieve something. It hinders their overall physical and mental development. As a result, children should have love for everyone and expand the hand of cooperation to everyone which will bring mental peace. For example, a study of the University of Chicago conducted in 2021 showed that children who run their life based on the principles of cooperation and compassion have garnered love from everyone and this attitude has strengthened the bonding of brotherhood. From the above discussion, it is clear why a significant number of people do not support the idea of competition in children.

This essay has discussed the reasons for which the connection of competition with children has gained both priority and discouragement. I personally believe that children should not be absolutely kept in darkness about the concept of competition because this will help the future generation to make their identity in the world and also play a vital role so that their passion, dedication, and hard work can be evaluated. For this reason, children should not be blindly competitive. They should learn how to do good to their own selves and everyone by dint of friendly competition.
