IELTS WRITING TASK: 02 (Cause-Effect)

Question:

Doctors recommend that older people should exercise regularly. However, many of them do exercise enough.

What are the causes?

What are the possible effects of these causes?

Model Answer:

Nowadays, doctors highly suggest that the senior citizens of a country should engage themselves with doing more and more physical exercises, but a majority of the elderly people shows aversion to exercises. Some of them think that they will be mocked by others and the rest of them just do not want any change in the last phase of their life. This kind of mindset will make them suffer from many unwanted diseases and leave a big impact on their mental state.

Though many older citizens heartily want to do physical exercises on a regular basis, they step back at the last minute. They remain afraid of being embarrassed by the deriding remarks of the middle-aged or the young people of their surrounding. It is quite true that everyone does not have equal mental strength to tolerate all these jeering comments. As a result, they abandon their wish for doing workouts and prefer to stay at home. Another dominant cause is that a huge amount of aged people are not ready to welcome any intervention in their daily routine. It is absolutely difficult for them to break their comfort zone at this stage of life and embrace physical exercises which were not a part of their previous life. They cannot win in the battle with their age which activates a kind of torpidity in them. For example, a recent study shows that 65% of the senior members prefer to recover only by taking medicines. They do not show any zest for involving themselves in the courses of aerobic activities. These are the few causes why most of the older people turn their back to exercises.

If the scenario is not changed, some drastic consequences will occur. To begin with, there will be hormonal disbalance due to the sedentary lifestyle and they will put on extra weight. This excess weight will lead to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other deadly diseases which will shorten their life span. Furthermore, senior citizens will lose their convivial state of mind and it will stymie them day by day. They will not be able to take part in the occurrences of their daily life in a sprightly manner. To illustrate, an article of 2021 showed that aged people lack of vitality because they are not habituated to do different types of rejuvenating exercises like walking, jogging, swimming etcetera. These are some thought-provoking effects of avoiding physical exercises by the community of older people.

According to doctors' advice, physical exercises should be taken regularly to ensure a good health of the aged members. Some of them avoid aerobic sessions since they do not want to be ridiculed by others. Other old people do not want any change in the regular flow of their life. If they fail to include exercises in their routine for these causes, both of their physical and mental health will be affected.
