IELTS WRITING TASK 02 (CAUSE- SOLUTION)
Many offenders commit more crimes after serving their first punishment. Why is this happening and what measures can be taken to tackle this problem?
Model Answer:
A fair number of people fails to abandon the stigma of criminality even after experiencing their first punishment. Lack of proper rehabilitation and failure in ensuring a sustainable career in their later life are the two main causes of this problem. If the government of a country can ensure successful rehabilitation measures and create more job opportunities for the prisoners, the rate of tendency to commit more crimes will go downward.
It is noteworthy that all the prisons cannot provide the prisoners with a healthy rehabilitation care. The imprisoned people cannot get the chance to do constructive activities such as gardening, reading books, helping others etcetera. All the prisoners cannot take part in the skill-developing programmes due to the lack of proper management. Sometimes, the inspectors who are in charge of the prisoners treat them cruelly and there is no arrangement for their entertainment. In addition, the government cannot offer jobs to all the prisoners since the resources are limited. If the offenders do not get any chance to earn their livelihood, they cultivate the tendency of engaging themselves with more and more subversive activities. For example, a recent study shows that the contemptuous attitude of the rehabilitation officers drain their energy to start a new rectified life and so the wrongdoers do harm to others . These are the two main causes which prevent the evildoers from overcoming their bestial instincts.
To change this situation, the authorities should take a vow that they will do everything so that the prisoners can be transformed into good human beings. All of them should be given equal chances to get themselves involved in doing creative tasks and flourish their cognitive skills under a proper supervision system. Besides, their mental health should also be taken care of. Another solution is to give them suitable job outlets to lead a healthy life. For example, a strategy of a China newspaper published in 2021 showed that the 65% anti-socials forgot about their previous cursed life and redirected the stream of life by dint of their viable jobs. These few steps can be taken to make the criminals feel averse to commit further crimes after the first session of their punishment.
It is hard to give up the habit of committing crime even after being served the first punishment. When the rehabilitation centres fail to functionate properly and the prisoners are defeated in the competition of securing befitting jobs for them, they become violent again. It is the prime responsibility of the exoneration organizations to help the prisoners forget their dark past through different formative tasks and their should be an adequate amount of suitable jobs for them.
